EMPOWERING WOMEN

Women Empowerment Activities in the rural and urban areas are focusing on educating Indian women through seminars, camps and symposia on the opportunities available for them in the global economy and also their rights in the family and society.

The constitution of India guarantees equality of opportunity and status to men and women. It also directs that the state shall make provisions- both general and special for the welfare of women. Women in India, who are nearly half the Population, Suffer from many social and economic disadvantages, culturally too their roles are ill defined for public participation.

Increasing number of incidence against women is being reported across the country by media and other forums. The atrocities mostly committed are rape, sexual harassment, molestation, dowry violence, wife beating, eve-teasing etc. These offences are not merely a problem of law but are also indicative of the disabilities and inequalities from which the women in our country continue to suffer, despite the Constitutional provisions for equality, social Justice and protection.

This issue needs to be considered in a wider social framework, taking into account the various socio-cultural and economic factors that make Indian women more vulnerable to insecurity, exploitation and degradation. Most of the disabilities and constraints on women arise from socio-cultural institutions. The traditional Social Structure, cultural norms and value systems continue to place Indian women in a situation of disadvantages in terms of relationships, decision -making and sharing of responsibility.

The constant stress on women's empowerment without corresponding changes in social attitudes are leading to women being subjected to antagonism. There is undoubtedly a much greater need to release them from their dependent and unequal Status in society. Unfortunately the social laws that seek to mitigate the problems of women remain largely unknown and at times are palpably over seen resulting in Indian women being found in distress and more insecure, socially and morally.

It is a fact that unless people themselves participate and respond to the demands of progress no Government effort alone can bring about significant results in the field of women's development. Improvement of the status of women can be ensured only through their full integration and participation in the task of national development.

JNNYC has been working towards improving the quality of life of the Indian Women especially in Rural India through promotion of Economic self-reliance and Legal awareness.  Many vocational and technical courses are being promoted by JNNYC that are aimed at making women self-employed and self-reliant. Formation of self-help groups was first introduced in some states like Andhra Pradesh by JNNYC in early 1980s’. Since then JNNYC has been promoting various women activities on a regular basis and successfully made hundreds of women self reliant and strength of modern India.
